***UPDATE – SEE THE PANEL CONVERSATION HERE

Political violence is not a new phenomenon. With the growing number of women in office, the violence towards them is also rising. Violence against women in politics takes many forms including death threats, rape threats, sexual harassment, misogyny, disparagement, doxxing, and sexist and racist abuse. These tactics attempt to silence and to force compliance. They undermine our democracy by discouraging people from running for and serving in office.

In this panel discussion, hosted on zoom and streamed on Facebook live, we will talk to SLO County elected officials about their experience with harassment, discuss the effects of this behavior on our democratic process, and suggest solutions to building a democracy that is inclusive and free of intimidation.

Panelists:
Heidi Harmon, Mayor of San Luis Obispo
Maria Garcia, Paso Robles City Council Member
Cynthia Replogle, Oceano Community Service District Director
– moderated by Dawn Addis, WMSLO Founding Member and Morro Bay City Council Member
– with call to action from Mariam Shah, Grover Beach City Council Member
