What is the purpose of #WearAMaskSLOCounty campaign?
The purpose of this campaign is to promote CDC recommended public health safety measures in order to slow down the spread of the COVID-19 virus and protect our communities. These measures include social distancing, frequent hand washing and wearing facial covering when social distancing is not possible or is difficult to maintain. Recent studies have shown that face masks can slow the spread of the virus through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. By wearing a mask, we protect each other.

Why should I wear a mask?
As our County progresses further through California’s Resilience Roadmap stages and our economy reopens, social distancing will become more difficult to maintain. Recent studies have shown that a significant portion of individuals with coronavirus lack symptoms (“asymptomatic”) and that even those who eventually develop symptoms (“symptomatic”) can transmit the virus to others before showing symptoms. This means that the virus can spread between people interacting in close proximity – for example, speaking, coughing or sneezing – even if those people are not exhibiting symptoms. Cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain can help lower the spread of the virus. We want to open and stay open. Proper use of masks, along with other recommended guidelines, can help us do that.

Should everyone wear a mask?
Not everyone can and should wear a mask. According to CDC, children under age 2 and anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance should not wear a mask. It is critical to emphasize that maintaining 6-feet social distancing and proper hand washing remains important to slowing the spread of the virus, even when wearing a mask.

Where can I get a cloth face mask?
Cloth face masks are now easily available for purchase online, as well as in the stores. Many groups and individuals in our community make masks and donate them, or sell them for a reasonable price. If you are having problems finding a mask, please let us know and we will connect you to the right resource. We will be sharing a list of cloth mask makers here as well.

I agree with the campaign’s overall message, but do not wish to be associated with Women’s March SLO.
You do not need to be. As individuals, we each have a power to promote public health safety measures in our own ways. Our goal is to simply keep our community as safe as possible, and save as many lives as possible, which we can all do by following the recommended guidelines.
