No one is safe from gun violence. Knowledge is one of the greatest connectors between humankind. To have an open and candid bipartisan discussion geared towards creating solutions is a crucial step in the right direction.

On Saturday, May 26, 2018, student organizers from the March For Our Lives and Women’s March SLO will host Town Hall For Our Lives at the United Church of Christ from 3-5pm.

The event is geared towards opening up a more extensive conversation about gun safety policies in our community. Admission to the event is free, however attendees are encouraged to sign up in advance through the Town Hall’s Eventbrite page online to secure themselves a seat.

“A few months ago we marched for our lives, and now we are demanding that our voices continue to be heard through an open and honest dialogue,” said San Luis Obispo High School senior Oliver Hicks. “It is important for us to be relentless in this fight for safer communities, and in doing so we must hold our representatives accountable to ensure that progress is made.”

The Town Hall will consist of a 4-5 person panel. Confirmed panelists include Congressman Salud Carbajal, San Luis Obispo City Council Member Andy Pease, San Luis Coastal Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Eric Prater and Everytown for Gun Safety Spokesperson Richard Martinez.

“This is a public health crisis, and it’s everyone’s duty to step up and find a solution. We cannot let gun violence become something that we as a society get used to. It needs to be addressed now, and the Town Hall For Our Lives is a perfect place to start,” said Morro Bay High School junior Audrey McClish.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions during the public comment section of the event. All members of the Central Coast community are encouraged to attend and contribute to this important discussion. Latest updates can be found on Facebook event page.

In order to accommodate more people, this Town Hall will take place in the Sanctuary of the United Church of Christ. Please note that no food or beverages are allowed other than water. Thank you for your understanding.
